Most of Tokyo is comprised of impossibly narrow alleys twisting around in nothing resembling a grid. For a foreigner, this can either be intimidating or enticing. Fortunately, Tokyo feels like the safest city of it's size in the world, so you can feel fairly free to wander.

Long-time Tokyo resident Donald Richie has written an excellent book on Tokyo; containing many pearls of wisdom, such as: "Shinjuku at night is New Year's eve anywhere else."

Tokyo is cris-crossed by a sprawling network of subway and rail stations.
